COVENTRY CITY PROMOTED TO THE PREMIER LEAGUE

Dylan Unarket – Studio 74- Saturday, Apr 18, 2026

A Bobby Thomas leap of faith sent the Sky Blues back to the promise land after 25 years of hurt and suffering. The Sky Blues got over the line last night at Ewood Park following a 1-1 draw with Blackburn Rovers.

The promotion was a much anticipated one. After 25 years away, the Sky Blues are back. During the 25 years since their relegation, Coventry City have endured pain beyond imaginable for a club with their status. They were betrayed by their owners, left homeless on multiple occasions and left to suffer in the depths of League 2. It was only through the endless support of fans that this club didn’t go bust. Thanks to the work of Mark Robins, Doug King, the incredible work of staff and the endless support of fans, the club were able to see off the challenge and rise to the occasion. After 2 promotions in 6 years, the club came just a kick away from the Premier League. However, it was not enough. The club lost the play-off finals. For 2 years after, the club fought close to the play-offs, however they could not get over the line.

In steps ‘Super’ Frank Lampard. Following the sacking of Mark Robins in November 2024, the club appointed Frank Lampard. Fast forward to the 25/26 season, the season where the dreams came true for the city of Coventry. 25 wins. 10 draws. 7 losses. 85 goals scored. 85 points. It all came down to Friday, April 17. 1 point, and they were back.

Carl Rushworth. Milan Van Ewijk. Joel Latibeaurdie, Bobby Thomas. Liam Kitching. Jay Dasilva. Matt Grimes. Victor Torp. Frank Onyeka. Jack Rudoni. Ephron Mason-Clark. Ellis Simms. Haji Wright. Led by Frank Lampard. They needed 1 point to fulfil the dreams of the 7,500 fans in the away end.

The game was end-to-end; an intense first half ended 0-0 with Blackburn Rovers ready to spoil the party. That which they did, as Blackburn Rovers took the lead following a counter attack, with a goal from Ryoya Morishita in the 54th minute. Away end, silenced. All hopes looked lost. 83:55. 83:55. A moment written in Sky Blue history. Brandon Thomas Asante, winning a free kick in a dangerous position. Victor Trop, to whip it in.

Bobby Thomas with the that ‘leap of faith’

With the header of dreams, 25 years of wait and pain is almost over. Away end sent crazy, fans at home with the ‘limbs’ of their life. The boy from Chester has just risen to send Coventry City to the Premier League with merely minutes left on the clock.

COVENTRY CITY, PREMIER LEAGUE AGAIN.

Frank Lampard and his side have done it. The class of 2026 have just healed a broken city. They are back. Emotions were high, as the 7500 fans in Blackburn celebrated, along with the thousands who celebrated back home. Finally, after 25 long years.

COVENTRY CITY ARE PREMIER LEAGUE.
