SPORTS SPOTLIGHT – WHAT A DAY TO REMEMBER – MAY 4TH ALL DAY – 2026

Positioned along Holyhead Road near the Four Pounds Avenue junction, you could feel it building long before anything came into view. The avenue wasn’t just busy — it was a full-on sea of sky blue. Scarves in the air, shirts everywhere, flags waving, and strangers already talking like old friends. There was that buzz you only get on the biggest days… the kind that makes you grin without even realising.

Then the bus parade appeared — and everything lifted.

The noise, the energy, the emotion.

First sight of SUPER FRANK at the helm of the team bus and it just hit: this is really happening.

THE CHAMPIONS ARRIVAL – Players up top, smiling, laughing, taking it all in like kids living out a dream — and honestly, so were we.

The chants echoed through the crowd on repeat—“We live and die” by Coventry’s own The Enemy, the haunting, heartfelt chorus of “Zombie” by the legendary Cranberries, and the die-hard cries of “City! City!” ringing down the road, all blending into full-throttle renditions of terrace classics that had everyone united in the moment.

FAN SPRAYS THE AVENUE BLUE AS THE BUS HEADS ONTO QUEENSLAND AVE WITH ‘THE KING’ ONBOARD.

Hoping to catch a glimpse, we marched on like a united army. The air was electric with a sense of love and pride. Did we just say that? Wasn’t that a song that stemmed from Coventry? Indeed it was—and how fitting, with the KING himself on board! (Just not that one) …Just a sprinkle of light-hearted humour for our readers, all in true ‘COV’ style.

 

WHAT A DAY TO BEHOLD

 

As the Sky Blue Army marched up The Four Pounds Avenue smiles beamed across everyone’s faces and amongst the smoke a face appeared looking back at us.

 

 

 

MEET JOHN GREEN ‘FOREVER A SKY BLUE’ AND NOW ‘FOREVER IN OUR HEARTS TOO’

 

It was at that moment the emotion truly settled in — not just joy, but reflection. A thought for all the Coventrians and Sky Blues supporters who are no longer here to witness days like this, watching instead from the great  sky blue sky above.

We gently tapped the wearer of this shirt on the back, introduced ourselves, and asked if we could take a photograph. Calmly and without hesitation, he replied, “For sure.”

After taking the picture — and another of him proudly wearing it — he looked at us and said, “His name was John Green, and he was a lifelong fan.”

We asked if he was happy for us to share John’s memory on our platform. He nodded with pride.

  Proudly carrying the memory of lifelong Sky Blue John Green through the Coventry celebrations.

We thanked him, exchanged a final smile, and just like that, he disappeared back into the sea of sky blue, marching on with his support party as the songs carried through the Coventry air.

By the time the bus reached Hearsall Common, it had turned into something else entirely. Voices rising like a chorus amplifying on match day we hadn’t caught sight of ELLIS SIMMS on Holyhead Rd but here he was looking deep in reflection. Mr Simms we applaud you for your skill and temperament shown throughout the season – S74

Blue smoke flares drifting through the air, chants bouncing across the open space, people singing with everything they had. And then — there he was — DOUG KING, right in it, singing at the top of his lungs with the fans. That moment? That made it real in a different way. Not just a parade — something shared.

Then off they went into the distance for a breather we suppose before the appearance infront of 50,000 awaiting fans and Coventrians at The War Memorial Park as we then descended on the street parties that we could hear heading towards the borough of Earlsdon…..BIG FUN

MEET ‘GHOST’ CITY SUPPORTER SINCE BIRTH

 

After chatting with a few fans, the energy rolled right on down towards Earlsdon without missing a beat. Horns blared, vuvuzelas buzzed, and chants kept coming — nothing but pure noise and joy.

“SHINE ON ” The sun breaking through like it had perfect timing, lighting everything up as if it knew what this meant.

The City Arms was jam-packed, inside and out, with sky blue as far as you could see. It felt like the terraces had spilled into the streets, and no one wanted the party to end.

 

 

As the evening neared to 7pm , the time Coventrians knew the War Memorial Park event would end, the road leading from the park to Earlsdon began to get lively  — more fans, more voices, more energy. Earlsdon High Street became the heartbeat of it all. Louder, fuller, brighter.

 

This wasn’t just a celebration — it was a feeling. Coventry City — how we love you. CCFC — how we thank you. Days like this don’t come around often, but when they do, they stay with you.
